DTC Licensing 101

What spirits producers need to know about direct-to-consumer licensing across state lines.

More states than ever are opening the door to direct-to-consumer spirits sales. Here’s what you need to know before you start shipping.

What is DTC licensing?

Direct-to-consumer (DTC) licensing allows licensed spirits producers to ship product directly to end consumers in participating states, bypassing the traditional three-tier distribution system.

Which states allow it?

The landscape shifts frequently, but states like California, New York, and New Hampshire have established pathways for distillery DTC shipping licenses.

What does the process look like?

  1. Application - Submit a state-specific license application with your business and product details.
  2. Review - The state regulatory body reviews your application, typically over several weeks.
  3. Approval - Once approved, you’re authorized to ship to consumers in that state.
  4. Ongoing compliance - Most states require monthly or quarterly volume reporting.
  5. Yearly renewal - All licenses need to be renewed yearly to continue DTC shipping.
